The short answer

SCFHS requires 20, 40 or 60 CME hours per two-year registration period, depending on your professional category: technicians 20, non-physician specialists and pharmacists 40, physicians and dentists 60. There are no other targets.

20 h40 h60 h

Three numbers, four categories

Most confusion comes from looking for your specialty in a list. SCFHS does not set hours by specialty. It sets them by the category on your professional registration. Once you know your category, the number follows.

20
hours / 2 years

Technician

Every health technician classification.

40
hours / 2 years

Specialist

Non-physician specialists, including registered nurses.

40
hours / 2 years

Pharmacist

Pharmacists, whatever their setting.

60
hours / 2 years

Physician / dentist

Every grade from GP to consultant.

Find the title closest to yours. If two rows look similar, the word "technician" or "specialist" on your registration decides.

Nurses often need the extra step of checking whether they are registered as a registered nurse or a nursing technician. The guide to CME hours for nurses covers that split in detail.

There is no 30-hour category
You may see 30 hours quoted online for some professions. No SCFHS category has a target of 30. If someone tells you otherwise, check your own record in Mumaris Plus.

Common mix-ups

Three mistakes come up again and again. The first is reading a colleague's target as your own because you share a department. A technician and a specialist in the same lab do not share a number. The second is counting certificates instead of posted hours, when renewal only sees what is in your Mumaris Plus record. The third is assuming that a higher job grade means more hours. A resident and a consultant both need 60, and a junior and a senior pharmacist both need 40.

From job title to a plan: three examples

The table gives you a number. Turning it into a plan takes one more step, which is subtracting what is already posted. Each Mulhim course is 5 hours, so the gap divided by 5 is your course count.

ProfessionTargetPostedGapCourses

Radiology technician200204
General practitioner600608 online, then 20 hours from other accredited activities

The physiotherapist's gap matches the 30-hour bundle exactly. The technician's matches the 20-hour bundle. The GP is the only one who cannot close the gap with a single bundle today, so he starts with 40 and books accredited events for the rest. If a course or event does not show up in the record, contact the provider first, then raise a Tawasul ticket with the provider name, the activity approval number and the date.

For a longer explanation of each category, with the reasoning behind it, see the full guide to SCFHS CME hours by category.

What does "per two-year period" mean?

Professional registration lasts two years, and the hours are counted inside that period. You can apply to renew three months before it ends, and a late fine applies from 31 days after it ends. If the required hours are not complete, SCFHS can renew for one year instead of two, only once.

How do you confirm your own number?

  1. Sign in to Mumaris Plus.
  2. Check the professional classification on your registration.
  3. Open your CPD record to see the hours required and the hours already posted.
  4. Subtract to find the gap, then plan accredited activities to close it.
Already above target?
As shown in Mumaris Plus, hours earned beyond your target carry over as a balance you can use later.

Bundles that match the targets

Every Mulhim course is SCFHS accredited and carries 5 CME hours, and Mulhim is fully accredited. The bundles are built around the category targets, each gives 6 months of access, and Mulhim posts your hours to Mumaris Plus within 24 to 48 business hours. Physicians and dentists start with 40 and top up to 60.

Frequently asked questions

How many CME hours does SCFHS require?

20 for technicians, 40 for non-physician specialists and pharmacists, and 60 for physicians and dentists, per two-year registration period.

Does my specialty change my hours?

No. Hours follow your professional category, not your specialty or department.

Are CPD hours and CME hours the same?

Yes, in SCFHS terms. Mumaris Plus calls them CPD hours, and they are the continuing education hours that renewal checks. This piece on CPD vs CME explains the two terms.

Do the hours reset every period?

Each target belongs to one two-year period. As shown in Mumaris Plus, hours beyond the target carry over as a balance.

Where do I check my target?

In your Mumaris Plus account, which shows your classification and your CPD record.
