SCFHS requires 60 CME hours from every physician and dentist in each two-year registration period. The number is the same for a general practitioner, a resident, a specialist and a consultant. Hours must come from accredited activities and be posted to Mumaris Plus.
SCFHS CME hours for a physician: one target for every grade
Seniority changes many things in medicine, but not the CME target. SCFHS sets hours by professional category, and physicians and dentists share one category for this purpose.
| Grade | Medicine or dentistry | Hours per period |
|---|---|---|
| General practitioner | Both | 60 |
| Resident | Both | 60 |
| Specialist | Both | 60 |
| Consultant | Both | 60 |
Per period
The full target for one two-year registration period.
Per registration
Hours belong to the period, not to the calendar year.
Renewal window
You can apply to renew three months before the period ends.
What counts toward the 60?
Any accredited activity can count: a conference, a workshop, a hospital grand round or an online course, as long as that specific activity is accredited. Accreditation is granted per activity and per provider, so a well-known organiser does not guarantee that every session counts. Ask before you attend.
Renewal reads your Mumaris Plus CPD record, not the certificates you collect. For activities inside the Kingdom, the provider posts the hours. If a conference you attended is missing, contact the organiser first. If that does not work, raise a Tawasul ticket with the provider name, the activity approval number and the activity date.
Track your 60 hours in four steps
- At the start of each period, note your target and renewal date.
- After every activity, check that the hours were posted to your CPD record.
- Halfway through the period, compare what is posted with what is left.
- Six months before the end, plan accredited activities for any remaining gap.
The dates that frame your period
If the required hours are not complete, SCFHS can renew for one year instead of two, and only once. As shown in Mumaris Plus, a reminder arrives about 60 days before expiry by email and WhatsApp, and hours earned beyond your target carry over as a balance you can use later.
How do 60 hours look in a real period?
Sixty hours over 24 months is 2.5 hours a month. Put that way it sounds light, and for most physicians the problem is not the volume. It is that hours arrive in lumps (a conference here, a course there) and nobody checks the running total until the renewal window opens.
| Scenario | Posted | Gap to 60 | As 5-hour courses |
|---|---|---|---|
| Consultant who attends two conferences a year | 35 | 25 | 5 |
| Resident with a heavy on-call rota | 0 | 60 | 12 |
| Dentist in private practice | 20 | 40 | 8 |
The consultant needs 5 more courses. The resident who has posted nothing needs 12, which is too many to leave for the last 3 months: start with the 40-hour bundle (8 courses, 6 months of access) and plan the remaining 20 hours from other accredited activities. The dentist with 20 posted hours closes the gap with the 40-hour bundle alone.
Which mistakes do physicians make most often?
- Assuming a consultant needs fewer hours than a GP. The target is 60 at every grade.
- Counting departmental meetings that were never accredited. Ask whether the session has an activity approval number.
- Trusting the certificate folder. Only posted hours appear in your CPD record, and that record is what renewal reads.
- Starting the search in the final weeks. The late fine applies from 31 days after the period ends, and a conference that never posted takes time to chase.

Closing the gap online
Every Mulhim course is SCFHS accredited and carries 5 CME hours, and Mulhim is fully accredited. Physicians and dentists usually start with the 40-hour bundle and top up the rest with other accredited activities. A new 20-hour offering for physicians and dentists is coming soon. Each bundle gives 6 months of access, certificates are downloaded from your dashboard, and Mulhim posts your hours within 24 to 48 business hours. For a step-by-step route, read reaching 60 hours.
